Data integrity is the quality of correctness, completeness, wholeness, soundness and compliance with the intention of the creators of the data. It is achieved by preventing accidental or deliberate but unauthorized insertion, modification or destruction of data in a database. Data that has integrity is identically maintained during any operation (such as transfer, storage or retrieval). Put simply in business terms, data integrity is the assurance that data is consistent, certified and can be reconciled. [1]

Data integrity is one of the six fundamental components of information security.

In other words, Data Integrity or Quality refers to the principle stating that "data or information in EHRs is accurate and created appropriately and have not been altered or destroyed in an unauthorized manner."[1] Data Integrity is a "phase 1" (safe HIT) principle from the ONC-sponsored SAFER Guides along with Data Availability and Data Confidentiality.
