The Medicare Inpatient Hospital Dashboard offers views of the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) data as it relates to claims payment and volume as collected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Systems (CMS). The Summary Data is based on IPPs to Hospitals by State and Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) code. This display is visually pleasing with moving graphics to show differences over time.

In summary the dashboards present Medicare data in a pleasing graphic format.  However, it is not clear who is the target audience for these dashboards.  The audience is probably not Medicare beneficiaries, or the general public.  The information is at a fairly high level, for example the information in the Prescription Drug dashboard does not link classes of drugs with their brand names. There is also an underlying assumption that one has some knowledge of Medicare payment systems and DRGs, even though these terms are explained within a glossary.

‘’’Clinical dashboards’’’ and quality dashboards display data relating the particular condition of a grouping of patients in real-time, and in a visually concise and usable interface. The purpose of dashboards is to monitor certain metrics of a patient cohort for clinical decision support or to otherwise improve healthcare quality, efficiency, and safety.

A clinical dashboard often summarizes information from an associated electronic health record (EHR) into aggregate metrics, such as performance or quality indicators, to provide feedback to clinicians and managers at the point of decision making.
