Problem Statement

Scope of problem

Timeliness of administration of ‘clot-busting’ drugs in heart attack can save lives, yet time to administration may be too long. 1.1 million people have heart attacks, or myocardial infarctions each year in the US. Two lives per 1000 are lost per hour of delay, so reducing to ½ hour could save thousands of lives.

Recommendation: Mean time to thrombolysis should be < 30 minutes from hospital arrival for heart attack patients. [1]

Setting: Emergency Department

Aims: To improve heart attack treatment for patients entering the emergency department.
