An interdisciplinary field integrating biologic, statistical and computer science knowledge to form novel technologies that address genetic components of disease affecting pathology, disease progression and treatment responsiveness. Bioinformatics was integral to the organization and interpretation of the Human Genome Project. The field is also instrumental in the development of transformative technologies, including high throughput (automated, rapid, large sample size) technologies such as high throughput DNA sequencing, CDNA/ Microarray analysis, and protein expression analysis. Bioinformatics is also central to genome wide association studies used to detect candidate gene mutation profiles for complex diseases.
