Personally identifiable data

The Office of Management and Budget defines Personally Identifiable Data as "any information about an individual maintained by an agency, including but not limited to, education, financial transactions, medical history, criminal or employment history, and information which can be used to distinguish or trace individual's identities such as their name, social security number, date, and place of birth, mother's maiden name, biometric records, and so on; it includes any other personal information which is linked or linkable to an individual."[1]

In terms of HIT, Personally Identifiable Information involves all health related data that can be used to identify the patient.
