This is a qualitative study by Joshua E Richardson and Joan S Ash. (2011) in the Journal of American Medical Informatics Association, entitled “A clinical decision support needs assessment of community-based physicians.” [1]
Introduction
The Clinical Decision Support (CDS) Systems provide healthcare providers and consumers with knowledge and person-based information, intelligently filtered and presented at appropriate times to improve health and healthcare.
CDS supports this knowledge to:
- Clinician
- Staff
- Patients
- Other individuals
The goal of the study was to provide a user-centered perspective that could help developers optimize CDS functions to meet the needs of physicians in a community-based setting. [1]
Methods
The purpose of the study was to gain community-based physicians’ perspectives in decision-making, which include:
- goals
- Environments
- Tasks
- Desired support tools
The study utilized human-computer interaction model
- 30 recorded interviews
- 25 Observations - primary care providers
- 15 Observations - Urban and rural community based clinics
Conclusion
The findings from the study suggest that the decision support needs to be extended from current process. Two other opinions brought up by the physicians were:
- Addition of wide range of clinical decision-making
- Improvement in cognitive decision-making
