ISSSTEMed is an Electronic Health Record conceptualized by "The State’s Employees´ Social Security and Social Services Institute" (ISSSTE) a decentralized organism that consists of an own administration, a legal personality and own patrimony conformed by the workers’ contributions as well as Federal Government’s aid in Mexico. [1]. It is a comprehensive register system for the medical attention that connects the different areas of the medical unit which participate in the process of health delivery, integrating in this manner all of the information related to the health status of the patient. [2].

History

In 1994, ISSSTE started a pilot project to help automatize the family medicine clinics, denominated as Automated System of Clinics and utilization of the Electronic Health Record with decentralized databases which was implemented in 6 family medicine clinics in Mexico, D.F.: Xochimilco, Ermita, Cuitláhuac, Xalostoc, Legaría y Narvarte.

In 1995 at the "20 of November" hospital, ISSSTE adopted an Information System of Hospital Administration (SIAH), through which services were provided by 300 terminals of desktop PC and 280 Macintosh equipment's. With the aid of these two technologies, different databases were maintained and a continuous release of newer system versions was delivered. [3].

The ISSSTEMed system from 2004 until now has been implemented in 93 medical units at a national level, currently having a total of 1,765,661 electronic health records, some of them with information such as medical appointments, medical history or register of medical license.
