In 1969, Pappalardo and Marble took their MUMPS software and started Meditech. In 1971, they introduced Meditech Interpretive Information System (MIIS) Language, a proprietary version of MUMPS, and started developing various modules of software for the health industry. In 1975, they released a pharmacy system, followed in the next 10 years by modules for payroll, radiology, account payable, blood bank, nursing, and materials management.

Many other subsystems for the health care industry followed. Meditech started using a DEC mainframe computer, and changing with technology to a distributed system with mobile and hand-held devices.

MUMPS, MIIS, and MAGIC

MUMPS was ANSI and ISO standardized, and served as a basis for MIIS development. In 1977, development started on MAGIC, the successor to MIIS, and development was finished in 1979 [1]. While MUMPS (also known as M) is widely used in health care and financial business software, MIIS and MAGIC remained IP of MEDITECH, and are not marketed outside of the company [2]. On Sept 3., 2011 Meditech could not expand it facilities in Freetown, MA because of archeological dig. This effects the expansion that will bring 800 new jobs.
